Change, that saucy little minx.
I begin this week’s missive with a wonderful-slash-infuriating quote from writer and philosopher Don Miguel Ruiz: author of transformative teachings such as The Four Agreements and The Mastery of Self. In addition to The Gospel, Richard Rohr, and everything ever written by Anne Lamott, he is my go-to spiritual guide of sorts.
“Humans get attached to the dream; we resist the transformation of Life. And this attachment, this resistance, creates emotional pain.”
In the wake of the Los Angeles wildfires, it’s hard to see the wisdom in full-fledged acceptance of horrific tragedies. Beating a tree with a baseball bat seems more appropriate.
I read the above quote the morning the fires broke out, and roughly 32 minutes after staring at myself in a magnifying mirror and examining and re-examining my pores — which have seemingly increased in size from needlepoints to moon craters in a matter of two years.
Against my better judgement, I bought an unforgiving LED-lit magnifying mirror in order to fill in my increasingly scant eyebrows that now require the artistic skill of Picasso to apply. Couple this scenario with the sad fact that my rear end is getting flatter by the day — no matter how many YouTube influencers’ pilates videos I make a regular part of my morning routine — and now I’ve got a full-bore midlife crisis on…
